The four costumes we will build this year:
What happens at the workshops? If you have been a part of one of these workshops, you know how fun they are. If you haven't been a part of one, here is what to expect. And NO, you do not have to have ANY experience doing this before. We are here to help and you will be part of a team of builders. There are always parts of the costumes that everyone can help build.
Day 1: We build the PVC frames of the costume around duplicate wheelchairs of what the kids have. You'll learn about Master Frames, attachment points, and weight distribution. Working with PVC pipes and joints is like Legos for adults. By the end of the day, we will glue the entire frame together so it is ready for Day 2. If possible, we would also want to paint the frame so it can dry over night and not be tacky for Day 2. |
Day 2:
This is where the costume starts to take shape. We will be adding the shell of the costume and details such as wheels, stickers, rear view mirrors, water, lights, sounds, sails, music, and anything else that is particular to that costume. By the end of Day 2, we hope to have a completed costume ready to be revealed to the child. Teams: Teams are composed of 6-8 people and we try and have a team leader that has built at least 1 costume before, from start to finish. We have had kids as young as 6 years old working on these costumes, and as old as retired couples coming in for something fun to do. When you arrive, you can choose which costume to work on (we will announce how many costumes and what they are a couple weeks before the event.) Reese and Lon (the founders of Walkin' & Rollin' Costumes) will be bouncing from costume to costume helping out the teams that are stuck or have questions. |
