A New Location for the Annual Workshop!
This year, we partnered with Hammerspace Workshop in Kansas City, Missouri to host our annual pre-Halloween workshop. This place was a dream come true for building all of these costumes. From laser cutting Cinderella wheels, to having every possible tool at our disposal was incredible. Thank you so much to Dave Dalton and everyone else at Hammerspace for making us feel so welcome.
We worked on 7 different wheelchair costumes at the event, with about 40 volunteers that showed up to lend a hand. Here is a breakdown of each costume. Thank you to all the volunteers for making this day such a success.

The Little Mermaid
Our first costume project was for 16-year-old Madalyn who requested a "Little Mermaid" Sea Shell throne costume. There is to be a large sea shell that Madalyn will sit in and then the rest of the wheelchair will be covered with all kinds of aquatic life reminiscent of the "Under the Sea" song from the movie. There will be many brightly colored shells, creatures and coral to surround her.

Toy Story - RC the Race Car
The second costume was for 4-year-old Clark. He wants to be Woody from "Toy Story" and have his wheelchair be RC from the first movie. This team consisted of some engineers willing to help design the framework for the costume. This costume will feature many different elements to pull it off. Can you say, "giant googly eyes?"

2 Cinderella Carriages
That's right. Not one, but two Cinderella Carriages! These were for 8-year-old Lexi and 3-year-old Gracie. The two wheelchairs were very different, but there were enough similar design elements in the costume that it was easier to have 1 large team work on both carriages at the same time. It may look like some elaborate pipe work, but everything will serve a purpose. Expect to see lots of lights, tulle and even a little bit of magic.
Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! |
Moana
Moana's boat was a fun costume for the team working on it. It is being made for 2-year-old Piper. With the sound of the chicken, Hei-Hei constantly being heard from anywhere in Hammerspace, I hope Piper enjoys making him squawk! There are some amazing elements on this costume that will really make it shine on Halloween night.
All we can say to Piper is . . . "You're Welcome!" |
Uma, Ursula's Daughter from "Descendants 2"
The next costume was for 10-year-old Zoe. She loves the Disney movie "Descendants 2" and especially the character Uma, who happens to be the daughter of Ursula from "The Little Mermaid." So we needed to make octopus legs. Uma is also a pirate captain, so the costume also adds in elements of a pirate ship into the design. There are so many elements going on and I hope Zoe loves her new costume. The team did a fantastic job and it's really going to be something special.

Bullseye from the "Toy Story" Movies
The final costume worked on at the workshop was for 5-year-old Jaxon. He loves "Toy Story" and the whole family is dressing up as Toy Story characters. Since Jaxon was going to be Woody, his wheelchair needed to be Bullseye, the trusty steed. This costume features a giant plush Bullseye that is worked around Jaxon and his wheelchair. There are a few more things being added that you don't see in these photos.
Jaxon will be getting a very special reveal party, that you can see on our Events page of our website. Be sure and check it out too. |
Now I'm sure that many of you would like to see the completed costumes of the 7 we worked on at the 2018 Annual Workshop. Here are the final photos of the 7 costumes we built in this workshop:
Our annual pre-Halloween workshop is held on a weekend in September.
